Abstract
A moulding composition comprises a solid vinyl aromatic polymer, e.g. polystyrene or polyvinyl toluene, and 12 1/2 to 15 parts by weight of a polyhydric alcohol polyether or a derivative thereof per 100 parts of polymer as an antistatic agent. Polyethylene glycols of the formula HOCH2(CH2OCH2)xCH2OH, their monoesters or mono-ethers or polyglycerols, e.g. tri- and hexa-glycerols, may be used and are compounded with polystyrene by extrusion, hot milling, or by bulk polymerizing the monomer in admixture with the polyether and a catalyst, e.g. a mixture of benzoyl peroxide and t-butyl perbenzoate, using a heating cycle of 48 hours at 77 DEG C., 24 hours at 90 DEG C. and 48 hours at 130 DEG C.
