Abstract
A process for the manufacture of terephthalic acid comprises oxidizing para-diacetylbenzene or para-acetylbenzoic acid by heating with an alkaline aqueous solution of a hypochlorite. When para-diacetylbenzene is the starting material para-acetylbenzoic acid is formed intermediately. In examples: terephthalic acid containing para-acetylbenzoic acid is obtained by treating para-di-acetylbenzene with warm, aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution, destroying excess hypochlorite with bisulphite, filtering off unchanged di-acetylbenzene and isolating the acidic product. Para-diacetylbenzene may be made from para-di-isopropylbenzene by oxidation with air. Specification 770,521 is referred to.
