Abstract

784,995. Grids for straining apparatus. DE LA RUE & CO., Ltd., T. Dec. 19, 1955 [Sept. 21, 1954], No. 27315 /54. Class 46. [Also in Group II] A screen or sieve for washing coal comprises parallel longitudinal slats, each slat having parallel top and bottom edges 2, 3 and one side, 4, perpendicular to these edges, the other side being tapered downwardly for part only of its length, as at 6, and being formed at intervals with spacing elements 8 which increase slightly the width of the top edge 2 and have faces perpendicular thereto to contact an adjacent slat and provide longitudinal slots between the elements, each slot having a minimum width at its top and increasing downwardly in accordance with the tapered side of the slat. The spacing elements 8 may be formed integrally with or separately from the slats, recesses, in the latter instance, being cut in the side of the slat to receive them. The spacing elements 8 are bored to receive tie-rods 10 which secure the slats together and to rigid side and intermediate members 11, 14, the ends of the slats being supported by L-shaped members 17 bolted to extensions of the side members and to the intermediate members 14 which also make a tenon joint 20 with them. The screen is made of a thermosetting plastic such as cotton &c. fabric, asbestos, glass fibre cloth or mat &c. impregnated with a phenol formaldehyde condensation product resin.
