Abstract

A wire coating composition comprises a synthetic linear polyamide, an alkyd resin, and a polyisocyanate or a substance capable of acting at elevated temperatures as a polyisocyanate. The alkyd resin preferably contains free hydroxyl groups and may be linear or branched and oil-modified or oil free. The ingredients are suitably dispersed in a solvent, e.g. cresol, the polyamide and alkyd being dispersed hot and the polyisocyanate or adduct thereof being added after cooling. The compositions may also contain a phenolic or aminoplast resin. In an example, 12.8 parts of polyhexamethylene adipamide, 0.85 parts of an alkyd resin (75 per cent solids) from glycerol, ethylene glycol and adipic acid and 2.55 parts of a polyisocyanate from m-tolylene diisocyanate, glycerol, diethylene glycol and phenol were dispersed in 83.8 parts cresol and the composition used to coat 22 gauge copper wire. The coating was cured by passing through a 3 ft. oven at a temperature of 420 DEG C. at 6-7 ft. per second, the wire reaching a temperature of 250-260 DEG C. The coating was subjected to the standard tests in B.S.S. 1844 of 1952. Specifications 461,236, 461,237 and 503,376, [all in Group IV], are referred to.
