Abstract

730,699. Heat and sound insulation. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. June 17, 1953 [June 24, 1952], No. 16717/53. Class 64 (2). An insulating structure consists of a sealed, evacuated envelope containing one or more masses 5 of compressed fibrous material, such as the glass or like fibre described in Specification 715,174 precompressed as in Specification 715,175, and one or more masses 6 of loosely packed fibrous material, e.g. glass fibre. The denser masses 5 support the walls 1, 2, which are welded together at their edges if they are of metal, and the loose masses 6 are said to provide sound damping. At least one of the two walls may be corrugated as shown or have dimples, to form cavities which contain the loose masses. The walls may be flat, the masses being arranged side by side in chequered fashion in equal or unequal sized blocks of square, triangular or hexagonal shape. Cavities for the loose masses 6 may be formed by parallel channels 16, Fig. 4, or isolated square depressions forming a waffle pattern.in a face of a dense mass 5, the channels or depressions being maintained, if necessary, by an embossed metal sheet 18. In another flat-walled embodiment, the cavities are formed by those of a lattice structure located against the wall 2.
