Abstract
736,567. Electrolytic production of titanium. HORIZONS TITANIUM CORPORATION. June 15, 1953 [July 3, 1952], No. 16418/53. Class 41. Metallic titanium is produced in the form of particles larger than 325 mesh by electrolysis of an alkali metal fluotitanate purified to the extent that its total content of aluminium, chromium, iron and vanadium is less than 0.1 per cent by weight of its titanium content, the fluotitanate being electrolysed in a fused salt diluent bath. Sodium and potassium fluotitanates are purified by crystallization from aqueous solution, to contain less than 0.02 per cent by weight of aluminium, chromium, iron and vanadium, inclusive. The fused salt diluent bath comprises alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halides such as sodium chloride or a eutectic mixture of sodium and potassium chloride. The bath components may be vacuum dried.
