Abstract

736,059. Flexible hoses. WARNE & CO., Ltd., W., and UNITED FLEXIBLE METALLIC TUBING CO., Ltd. Aug. 23, 1954 [Aug. 21, 1953], No. 23164/53. Class 99 (2). The body of a hose of rubber or rubber-like plastic is reinforced by at least two overlapping helices 6, 7 of metal strip, the spaces between the turns of each helix being masked by the turns of the other helix, and rubber-filled passages 11 lead around the edges of the turns from one side of the reinforcement to the other. As shown in Fig. 1, the body of the hose comprises layers 1, 3 and 5 of rubber and layers 2, 4 of one or more plies of textile material, the helices 6, 7 being channel-shaped and the edges 9 of each helix projecting towards the base portion 10 of the other helix. An external armouring 13 is provided, and in each helix 6, 7 there are holes 8 which provide further rubber-filled passages. A helical wire reinforcement may be embedded in the layer 1, and the helices 6, 7 may be covered overall by plies of textile material or braid, or woven or braided wire combined with or covered by rubber ; also, a layer of braided metal strands may be incorporated in any part of the hose structure. The helices 6, 7 may be of steel and brassplated to increase the rubber-to-metal bond, or the metal strip is surface treated or primed with a coating of polyisocyanate. In modifications (a) the helices 6, 7 comprise flat strips or strips of semi-circular or U-shaped cross-section; (b) each helix, Fig. 6, comprises two channels which face respectively outwards and inwards; and (c) the edges 9 of the helices are in contact and serrated, corrugated or recessed at intervals to provide for or augment the rubber filling around those edges.
