Abstract

<PICT:0727799/III/1> In the production of sulphur dioxide-containing gases by roasting iron pyrites with free oxygen-containing gas in a fluidized bed, finely divided ferrous sulphate solids are continuously fed to the bed with the finely divided pyrites, the pyrites and ferrous sulphate being supplied in such ratio to each other that the temperature in the bed is maintained above 750 DEG C. but below the fusion point of the bed solids, and the quantity of free oxygen supplied being so regulated that the product gases are substantially free from oxygen, whereby the sulphur trioxide content of the gases is maintained at a minimum. The ferrous sulphate may be FeSO4.7 H2O crystals or may be dehydrated to FeSO4.2 H2O or FeSO4.H2O, e.g. by passing the product gases through the ferrous sulphate in a separate reactor, and the bed should preferably be at about 900 DEG C. Pyrite entering at 33 and ferrous sulphate entering at 37 are fed by screw feeder 35 to bed 22 on perforated constriction plate 20, while air for roasting and for fluidizing the bed is fed at 25 into coned bottom 17. The product gas passes up through disengaging space 23 and out through 15 to cyclone 48. Roasted solids are removed at 50. For starting the process fuel is passed into the bed through 44, and is discontinued when the temperature of the bed is sufficient for self-roasting. Water may be added to the reactor if desired, and the ferrous sulphate or a mixture of ferrous sulphate and pyrite may be added dry or as a slurry.
