Abstract

An envelope-making machine comprises an adhesive-receiving roller, an adhesive-transferring roller and an adhesive-applying roller which are geared together and driven by gear wheels so proportioned in relation to the diametral sizes of the respective adhesive-carrying surfaces that the surface of the first-mentioned roller travels at a low linear speed, the surface of the second-mentioned roller travels at a higher linear speed, and the surface of the third-mentioned <PICT:0703932/III/1> roller travels at a linear speed which is different from that of the second roller, preferably higher than that of the second roller. The adhesive-applying roller or gummer 1 has adhesive-carrying surfaces A on spaced segments 2, and a gear wheel 6 with a pitch circle diameter less than the diameter of the surfaces A. The transfer roller 5, having a surface C close to the surfaces A, has a gear wheel 7 whose pitch circle diameter is greater than the diameter of surface C; thus surface C has a lower linear speed than surfaces A. Roller 5 has a small pinion 8 meshing with a large intermediate gear wheel 9, provided with a small pinion 10 meshing through an idler gear wheel 11 with a small pinion 12 on the gum-receiving roller 3, which has a surface B, dipping into a gum box 4, and is close to surface C. Surface B thus travels at a much lower speed than surface C. In an example surface A has a speed of 250 feet per minute, surface C has a speed of 150 feet per minute, and surface B a speed of 30 feet per minute.
