Abstract

Sugar is recovered from molasses by mixing the molasses, preferably dried, with methanol, preferably hot, allowing the mixture to stand at room, raised or lowered temperature and separating deposited sugar from the liquid. A small amount of sulphur dioxide and/or sulphuric acid, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide, sodium bisulphite or sodium pyrosulphite may be added. The alkalinity of the molasses may first be neutralized, e.g. with sulphuric acid or carbonic acid.
