Abstract
700,575. Projectile fuzes. MEFINA SOC. ANON. July 31, 1951 [April 13, 1951], No. 18067/51. Class 9(1) Relates to clockwork fuzes of the kind in which the clockwork mechanism controls the movement of a member which is pivoted eccentrically relatively to the axis of the fuze and which is moved, on firing, by centrifugal force, the said member controlling the movement towards its active position of at least a portion of the primer. According to the invention the centre of gravity of the member 36 is located, when the fuze is at safety, in a semicircle whose diameter is the line joining the spin axis of the projectile and the pivotal axis of the member, the semicircle being on the side of this diameter towards which the member moves from its position of rest. The arrangement is such that the angular acceleration of the projectile opposes the movement of the member towards its armed position. In the construction shown, a pivoted catch 37 swings outwards under centrifugal force to release the member 36. The speed of the released member about its axis 36a is controlled by escapement and balance wheels 31, 30, associated with gears 34, 35. After a given time a cut-out part 43 of member 36 registers with a notch 42 of a disc 41, to which is secured an unbalanced lever 39 carrying the primer 7, and as the disc is weighted at 47 it rotates, when released, to bring the primer 7 into line with the main charge. Stops 44, 45, limit the rotational movements of the member 36 and disc 41. In a modification, Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown), the primer is mounted on the movable member.
