Abstract

704,035. Powder metallurgy. MUREX, Ltd. Sept. 30, 1952 [Oct. 25, 1951], No. 25033/51. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXIV] In making a bearing comprising a sintered composition of either iron or steel and molybdenum disulphide, iron or steel powder is mixed with 5 per cent to 35 per cent by weight of molybdenum disulphide and is then pressed in a die to the desired shape. It is then sintered in an atmosphere of inert gas at a temperature lower than that required to produce a liquid phase. In a specific example the mixture comprises 100 parts by weight of iron powder and 20 parts by weight of molybdenum disulphide, and the compact is sintered in an atmosphere of nitrogen at a temperature of about 950‹ C. for a period of between 30 minutes and 1 hour. Alternatively the mixed powders may be hot pressed in a refractory or carbon mould, the mould being heated by high frequency current or direct electrical resistance.
