Abstract

692,136. Glass manufacture. METALLGES, AKT.-GES. Jan. 22, 1952 [April 19, 1951], No. 1800/52. Addition to 682,356. Class 56. A glass mixture prepared by the process claimed in the parent Specification, is converted into molten glass in a shaft furnace. The furnace is usually arranged as near as possible to the sintering apparatus so as to use the heat of the hot agglomerate. As shown the mixture from the granulating machine 1 passes through the charging device 2 to form a layer 4 on the travelling grate 7 and passes beneath the heating hood 3. The heating gases are drawn off through suction boxes 6 and 5, the cooler portion passing from box 6 to the stack, and the hotter portion through box 5 to a recuperator to extract a substantial proportion of the heat. The hot agglomerate 8 falls into a storage bunker 14 which may be separated from the shaft furnace 11 by a conical closure means 9, and the melting glass from the furnace falls into a clarifying and working tank 12 heated by burners 13. Gases, which may have a temperature of 800-900‹ C. pass from the furnace through pipe 10 to be used beneath hood 3 for sintering the batch. The sintering machine and the furnace may be separated, and the sintered mixture stacked, the furnace gases being preferably drawn off cold, and the sintering machine heated by a separate burner system.
