Abstract
699,152. Massage appliances. FERRIER, A. P. S. June 25, 1951 [June 29, 1950], No. ' 15056/51. Class 81 (ii). A device for stimulating the circulation comprises means for exerting a progressive compression and releasing the compression, in sequence. For treating a leg the limb 4 is wound spirally with a flexible tube 1, of normally flat cross-section, arranged so that the edges of adjacent convolutions overlap slightly, and the whole is enclosed in a non-extensible sheath or cover 6 which is tightly secured by lacing 9. Air from a compressed air cylinder 25 is passed through a reducing valve and optional heating means 23 to a changeover cock 17 which may either connect the air supply to a tube 11 and the lower connection 10 of tube 1 or may connect pipe 12 and outlet 19. The handle 18 is initially set to the first position and the admission of air to the tube 1 produces a constricting pressure on the limb which commences at the lower end and gradually extends to the upper end. On the completion of this phase the handle 18 is moved to the second position where it allows the air to escape to atmosphere. The procedure is then repeated. For treatment of the trunk or neck, a pad, formed of a tube folded in zig-zag arrangement and mounted on a flexible back member is firmly secured to the body by straps.
