Abstract

A cigarette filter tip, which may be internal to the cigarette or formed as a cup to receive the cigarette end, is made of resilient porous synthetic or natural rubber, preferably of porous latex foam, or alternatively, according to the Provisional Specification, of a spongy synthetic "plastic" or of fine natural sponge. Internal tips may be cylindrical or oval plugs, unitary or assembled from discs or from axially aligned strands bound together, alone or with an open-ended tubular paper or like wrapping, or may be a rolled-up strip of the material with or without a paper or like interleaf and/or wrapping. Such tips may have an axially aligned core as of cork, balsa wood, paper or cotton wool and an additional cotton wool, paper or other known plug at one end. Cup-shaped tips may have their inner and/or outer lateral walls reinforced as by porous paper. The tips may be perfumed or impregnated with a sweetening agent such as saccharine. According to the Provisional Specification the internal tips may be covered by opaque tissue paper and may be bundles of longitudinally twisted strands held together by cotton thread bindings or by adhesive; cores may be used extending from one tip end part-way only along the tip length and consisting of a rigid material such as cork or a moisture absorbing material such as hydrophilous cotton wool or filter or cr<\>zepe paper; and tips may be assembled from conical or domed discs. Internal tips may also be of spiral or screw shape or may consist of small particles of the basic material in a bag of, for example tissue or cr<\>zepe paper. The tips may be provided with cork bands. Cup-shaped tips may have their lateral walls reinforced by cork or rubber bands, or may be formed by dipping cigarette ends into latex foam and vulcanizing the resultant caps.
