Abstract
681,995. Cupola furnaces. POUMAY, A. June 1, 1949 [July 5, 1948], No. 14731/49. Class 51 (ii) A cupola furnace has a windbox 4 formed with inspection windows 5 and supplying blast air below the melting zone to main tuyÞres 7 and smaller secondary tuyÞres 6 disposed below said main tuyÞres, and also supplying air to supplementary tuyÞres 8 disposed above the melting zone preferably in helical fashion and controlled by valves 9. Each set of tuyÞres 6 and 7 is disposed below an overhanging portion of the refractory brickwork 3 to prevent the tuyÞres being blocked by slag or metal and the tuyÞres 6 are in the form of narrow horizontal slits delivering a thin sheet of blast air. The secondary tuyÞres 6, which are above the level of the molten metal in the cupola hearth, allow of the production of sufficient carbon monoxide to react with the free oxygen present at the level of the main tuyÞres 7 producing carbon dioxide.
