Abstract

686,404. Valve closure members. GODFREY, H. R. June 29, 1951 [March 29, 1950], No. 7822/50. Class 135. In a washer or jumper assembly for water and like taps comprising a resilient disc element 14 fitted within a substantially rigid holder 13, having a continuous flange 13<SP>1</SP> or a number of spaced tongues or projections, the seating face 18 of the element 14 projects in front of the peripheral edge or edges 15 of the flange or projections and a space 16 is left between the periphery of the element 14 and the side wall of the holder 13 so that when pressure is applied to the back of the holder in the normal operation of the tap, the element 14 on engaging the seat 4 of the tap is deformed and a part enters the space 16. Thereafter the edge 15 of the holder engages the seat 4 so that further compression of the disc element is positively prevented and the material of the element is not trapped between the edge 15 and the seat 4. The disc element 14 may be of natural or synthetic rubber and is preferably of frustro-conical shape. The central portion of the disc 14 within the seat 4 may be recessed. As shown the holder has a continuous flange 13<SP>1</SP>. The washer unit shown is formed as a separate unit from the jumper but it may be formed as a part of the latter. Thus the disc portion 10 of the jumper may be made cup-shaped to receive the resilient disc element 14. The element 14 may be held in the holder 13 by an adhesive or by the nut 12 on the spigot 11 or it may be a force fit in the holder.
