Abstract
A metal is heated in a fused bath consisting wholly or predominantly of a silicate, preferably water-soluble, a metal halide which forms complex salts and a diffusing metal, or alloy thereof, in powder form. Chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, aluminium or silicon may be diffused into iron, steel, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, tungsten or alloys, thereof. A halide, preferably the fluoride, of the diffusing metal may be used and fluosilicates and borosilicates may be added. Sodium silicate may first be formed by fusing powdered silica and anhydrous sodium carbonate, chromium fluoride and potassium silicofluoride added and the mix heated to 1100 DEG C and stirred; pieces of steel may then be immersed for a few minutes to 4 hours in the mix at 950 DEG to 1300 DEG C.
