Abstract

679,166. Sink-and float separation. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. June 11, 1947 [July 16, 1946], No. 15403/47. Class 82(ii) In a heavy medium separation process the feed of material and medium is supplied deeply submerged at the deep end of a wedge-shaped pool of high density medium adjacent a conveyer for the removal of sink product, a float product being obtained at the surface near the feed end and a middling product on the surface near the point at which the conveyer comes close to the surface. As shown, applied to the cleaning of coal, dirty coal and medium are supplied to a wedge-shaped container 1 through a shoot 7 near the top edge of a column of medium moved by a Archimedean spiral 2, the sink product, in this case a high ash coal, being removed by the spiral to a discharge 10. The float product, low ash coal, rises rapidly to the surface and is removed at an overflow 8 while the middlings being partly affected by the column moved by the screw, are discharged at an overflow 9. The dimensions of the conveyer should be large in comparison with the width of the container. The medium discharged may be cleaned, concentrated, and re-used.
