Abstract
678,872. Delivering measured quantities of granular materials. GASKELL & CHAMBERS, Ltd., (trading as NON-DRIP MEASURE CO.). May 21, 1951 [June 15, 1950], No. 14984/50. Class 106(v) Apparatus for delivering measured quantities of powdered or granular materials, such as sugar, tea and milkfood products, comprises a spindle 5 supported and guided at both ends in a horizontal cylinder 1 and a measuring chamber 12 formed by two piston members 8, 8a, axially spaced on the spindle, the spindle being axially movable by hand from a position in which it registers with a supply port 13 to a position in which it registers with an outlet 16. One piston member 8a is adjustable on the spindles to vary the volume of the measuring chamber by means such as a screw-thread connection and a lock nut 9. To facilitate the flow of material, the part of the spindle in the chamber may be of reduced cross-section and the return spring 11 may be fairly strong so as to jar the apparatus; the latter action may be assisted by mounting the apparatus resiliently. For use with tea or other fibrous material, the piston faces may be sharp-edged so that they shear any trapped material, and for use with powder, where, owing to the spindle being supported at both ends, the pistons may be a fairly loose fit, a hole 18 is provided through which any material passing the piston 8a is blown out by the action of the pistons. The spindle is either provided with a hand knob 10 or is operated by a pivoted lever connected to it by a crank.
