Abstract

661,636. Cleaning floors. ROLLNICK & GORDON, Ltd., and BRIDGE, W. J. May 8, 1950 [Aug. 24, 1949], No. 22005/49. Class 138 (i). A floor or other surface cleaning apparatus comprises a tank adapted to be secured to a motor driven suction unit, so that a vacuum created in the tank causes liquid to be drawn therein by way of a nozzle movable over the surface, a guide tube extending from the suction unit inlet into the tank and having perforations therein through which air can enter the tube, a float valve in the tube, and a shield surrounding the tube, wherein liquid cannot enter the tube to operate the valve and close the suction inlet until its level in the tank reaches the level of the upper edge of the shield. A tank a mounted on wheels or castors b is secured to an electric motor driven suction unit c, such as a vacuum cleaner for carpets. Between the suction chamber of the unit and the tank is formed a moulded or other rubber or like airtight seal d, while the tank has connected thereto a flexible hose e provided at its end with a nozzle (not shown) which is adapted to be moved over the floor or surface. Also arranged in the tank is a shield i secured thereto by welding, a brass guide tube g perforated at h and connected at its upper end to the suction inlet, in which tube is arranged a rubber or other ball f carried by a float f<SP>1</SP>. In operation liquid is drawn into the tank a until its level reaches the top of the shield i. It then overflows the shield and the float valve quickly operates to close the inlet to the suction chamber. In another embodiment a rubber ball is carried direct in a perforated guide tube without the intervention of a separate float.
