Abstract
669,912. Electron discharge apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. April 20, 1949 [May 14, 1948], No. 10478/49. Class 39 (i). In a cathode comprising a wire core 10 and a helical coil 11 of different material closewound tightly on it, the turns of the coil are alloyed with the core, as at 15. The core may be tungsten, and the coil tantalum or tantalumtungsten. The alloying is 'carried out by passing a current sufficient to cause incandescence at about 2400-3000 K. for about 48 hours. Suitable gauges of wire are specified, and data given. To compensate for greater evaporation from the centre of the filament, which becomes hottest, the central part of the core may be thicker, Fig. 2 (not shown), or the over-wound coil may be of thicker wire at the centre.
