Abstract

666,694. Stoppers; cans. CHIVERS & SONS, Ltd. Aug. 8, 1949. [Aug. 13, 1948] No. 21459/48. Classes 66 and 125(iii). A can or like metal container 1 having a dished plug-type lid 2 with a peripheral groove or recess 6 adapted to receive a sealing compound 7 has at its upper end at least two integral peripheral rings or abutments 8, 10, 25, 26 one 10, 26 of which is formed internally of the can to engage retaining means 3 on the plug portion of the lid whilst the other 8, 25 serves as an abutment against which the lid may be levered open, the upper raw edge of the can engaging the sealing compound. The peripheral rings may be formed by a swaging operation before or after the bottoms of the cans have been wheeled on. The maximum diameter of the outer rings 8, 25 is preferably slightly greater than the maximum external diameter of the lid to prevent dislodgement of the lid during packing &c. The can may be submitted to a vacuumizing process after filling, and after opening is resealed by engaging the detents 3 with the ring 10, 26. Specifications 513,491 and 523,202 are referred to.
