Abstract
666,061. Thermally-operated devices. TIGRETT, J. B. Aug. 27, 1947 [July 29, 1939], No. 23745/47. Class 69 (i) [Also in Group XIII] A thermally-operated device comprises a tube 12 having a condensing portion 13 at one end and a volatilising portion 14 at the other, the whole being at least partially evacuated, a balancing means 9 supporting the tube at a point between the ends so that the volatilising portion is always below the horizontal, and a volatile liquid in the volatilising portion, so that, on maintaining a temperature difference between the two ends, liquid is evaporated in the volatilising portion, some of the liquid and , vapour being transferred to the condensing portion causing the device to become out of balance and to move the condensing portion downwards ; on condensation of the vapour to liquid the latter flows by gravity to the vaporising portion and the cycle is repeated. The condensing portion may dip into a receptacle containing water as a coolant. The tube may be provided with a cover 23 and feathers 26, while the condensing portion may have a metal portion 16 containing a wick which covers the condensing portion, the whole giving the effect of a drinking bird. A counterweight 25 may off-set the weight of the portion 16 and may be arranged to strike a bell during the longest oscillations. The condensing portion may be arranged midway of the tube with volatilising portions at either end, Fig. 7 (not shown). The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes also the use of the device as an actuating means for moving part of an advertising device. This subject-matter does not appear on the Specification as accepted.
