Abstract

666,039. Drying apparatus. LEGG, Ltd., R., SCHREIBER, P. Q. R., and DICKINSON, W. H. C. Aug. 16, 1950 [Aug. 23, 1949], No. 21922/49. Class 34(ii) Apparatus for drying tobacco comprising a slightly inclined cylinder 4 continuously rotated on rollers 6 so that the tobacco passes down the cylinder and is discharged at the lower end, the cylinder having its upper end formed with openings 8 covered by gauze 10, has nozzles 16 which lie close to the gauze to direct blasts of gas at the gauze to clean it as the cylinder rotates and which are moved in the direction of the axis of the cylinder to traverse the whole area of the gauze. The nozzles 16 lie in a pipe 18 which is continuously reciprocated in the direction of the axis of the cylinder by a cam arrangement operated by a striker 36 on the end of cylinder 4. Warm air passes up the cylinder to dry the tobacco and is drawn through the openings 8 into a casing 12 surrounding the end of the cylinder and thence into a duct 14, the tobacco being fed into the cylinder by means of a shoot 2.
