Abstract

A mill in which there is, during use, danger of fire, explosion or deterioration of the material being ground due to frictional heat generated by the grinding operation, is provided with grinding elements of a construction capable of grinding material in the dry state mounted in a completely enclosed housing communicating with an inlet conduit, containing a sealing means, for feeding dry material to be ground to the mill and with an outlet conduit, for the ground material, having air-excluding means and a mechanically operated, continuously operable discharge means, an inlet conduit with a regulating valve being arranged to introduce a cooling fluid into the mill under the control of means responsive to increases and decreases in the load or rate of feed of material being ground. The mill described is identical with that described with reference to Fig. 1 of Specification 657,621. The cooling fluid may comprise steam introduced as such into the mill.
