Abstract

640.760. Flexible hose. FLIGHT REFUELL ING., Ltd.. SMITH. C. H.. and LAWSON. N. Aug. 5, 1948, No. 20716. [Class 99(ii)] A- hose, such as used for refuelling aircraft in flight, comprises an inner impervious corrugated metal tube 1, which may be of thin steel, directly upon which is tightly woven a tubular textile fabric 4 the warp 2 and weft 3 threads of which may be respectively parallel to and helically of the hose axis. The extensibility of the fabric is not greater than the permissible extensibility of the hose and the combined extensibility and compressibility. which may be greater than the former, is sufficient to permit the desired axial flexibility of the hose which latter condition may be obtained by selecting a number of picks of the weft of the fabric per inch so small in relation to the cross-sectional area of the weft thread that the space in which the element of the weft is enclosed by the adjacent warp threads is substantially greater than the cross-sectional area of the former. The hose may be terminated at one end of a nozzle of the kind described in Specification 491,953 and be wound on a drum carried in a tanker aircraft.
