Abstract
Silica gel-metal oxide catalysts substantially free from alkali metal compounds are prepared by hydrolysing a silicon tetrahalide (other than the fluoride) in a suitable salt solution and reacting with a weak base. The preferred halide is the chloride and the metal oxide component may be one or more of aluminium, scandium, yttrium, indium, thallium, lanthanium, cerium, pr sodymium, neodymium, magnesium, titanium, zirconium, copper, beryllium, zinc, cadmium, tin, platinum, antimony, thorium, vanadium, uranium, hafnium, gold, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, arsenic, palladium, germanium, iridium, and gallium. Bases specified are aliphatic and aromatic amines (e.g. diethylamine, aniline) and ammonium hydroxide, carbonate and bicarbonate. The product may be obtained as graded spheres by introducing the solution into ammonia gas or oil solutions of amines. The catalysts are used for cracking hydrocarbons, dehydrating alcohols to olefines (e.g. ethanol to ethylene), hydrating olefines to alcohols (e.g. propylene to isopropanol), isomerizing hydrocarbons and polymerizing olefines.
