645,903. Electromagnets. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. April 29, 1947, No. 9969/48. Divided out of 645,875 and addition to 584,695. Drawings to Specification. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXII] A gun for welding studs,.rivets, &c. to metal plates &c. wherein the arc is formed between the stud and plate by a fusible insert, has a body with work-engaging members thereon, and a piston carrying the stud and moved relatively to the body against a biassing force by pressing the end of the stud against the work until the work engaging members contact the work, the piston having an intermediate reduced part to receive an annular energizing coil for producing a flux on the axially-spaced pole faces of the piston so as temporarily to retain the piston in the withdrawn position, means being provided for causing an asymmetric distribution of the flux around the pole faces. The construction is fully described in Specification 645,875.
