Abstract

A substantially non-aqueous dispersion of a pigment in a liquid or liquifiable organic vehicle is prepared by flushing the pigment from an aqueous medium into the vehicle in the presence of benzylamine or an N-substituted methyl or benzyl derivative thereof. The amine may be used as such or as a soap of a fatty acid or resin acid, in an amount up to 5 per cent by weight of the dry pigment. Both organic and inorganic pigments can be so treated and iron blues, chrome yellows, organic lakes and pigment dyestuffs are specifically mentioned. Vehicles include coal tar solvents, mineral spirits, hydrogenated naphthas, linseed oil, chinawood oil, soya bean oil, perilla oil, synthetic and oleoresinous varnishes, mineral oil, petrolatum, castor oil, and waxes. Fatty acids include oleic, stearic, palmitic, linolinic and ricinoleic, whilst resin acids include rosin or abietic acid. The pigments are suitable for the manufacture of all types of protective and decorative finishes.
