Abstract
611,565. Forging bolts; shearing. WILKINS & MITCHELL, Ltd., and WILKINS, E. W. May 2, 1946, No. 13258. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] A press for hot or cold forging heads of bolts and the like, is characterised by a tool-holder carrying dies disposed at equal distances from the centre thereof, and co-operating upper tools depending from a moving head, the workpieces being moved automatically in succession from one pair of co-operating tools to another. In the embodiment described, the verticallymoving head 11 supports three tools for bolt heading 14 an upsetting tool which partially forms the head to conical form, 15 a heading tool which brings the head to cheese-shape, and 16 a shearing tool which shears the head to hexagonal shape and removes the flash, with corresponding dies 17, 18 and 19 mounted on a buttom tool holder 76. A turntable 20 mounted on the tool holder 76 and turnable about the vertical axis thereof, carries four pairs of spring fingers 21 and 21a, the fingers 21 of which are attached to a ring 24 and the fingers 21a to a lower ring 25, Fig. 4a (not shown), both turnably mounted about the vertical axis, the fingers tending to close together by the action of coil springs 28 connecting studs 26, 27 on fingers 21 and 21a respectively. Each time the head 11 ascends the fingers close together, one pair carrying a blank from the rotatable feed table 22 into position between the upsetting tools 14 and 17, another pair carrying a workpiece from the upsetting tools into position between the heading tools 15 and 18, and a third pair carrying a formed workpiece from the heading tools into position between the shearing tools 16 and 19. The fourth pair moves over the feed table 22 to pick up another blank. Between each operation the table 20 is turned through 90 degrees in an anticlockwise direction by a spring pressed pawl 34 operated by cam 39 through a rod 38, and is held in position by the engagement of a detent 47 on an arm 48, also operated from the cam 39, with one of the notches 46 in the periphery of the table. The workpieces are ejected from the dies 17 and 18 into the respective pairs of spring fingers by rods attached to a plate 12 positioned under the bed, while blanks are ejected in turn from the rotatable feed table on which they are positioned by hand, by the rod 67, up through the guide 68, Fig. 2 (not shown). Ejection from the final stage die 19 is effected by a rod 79a winch is separately actuated through the arm 80, rod 84, arm 85 and cam and roller 87 and 86, and ejects the now headed workpiece 90 up through the hollow shearing tool 16 past the spring clips 91, Fig. 6, whence it is further ejected at the next operation by the next completed workpiece. The spring fingers are opened wide enough to allow the upper tools to pass through by the insertion between studs 29 and 30 fixed to each pair of fingers, of a wedge shapecl projection 54, operated from the cam 39. Eccentrics 31 mounted on the turn-table 20 and which may be rotated and locked in any position, and against which studs 29a and 30a press, form adjustable stops to limit the closing of the spring fingers.
