Abstract
616,065. Detectors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and DOUGLAS, R. W. Aug. 23, 1946, No. 25223. [Class 40 (v)] A crystal detector comprises a glass envelope 1 formed from a hollow glass bead through which hollow metal tubes 2 are sealed by fusion of the glass and members, e.g. wire stubs 4, 6, supporting the crystal 3 and whisker 5, fixed in the tubes by spot welding or otherwise after relative adjustment. The metal whisker 5 extends axially through and is spot welded or otherwise secured in the stub 6. Solder applied to the stubs 4, 5 and leads 7 completes the hermetic sealing of the device. The crystal may be of germanium, or silicon with a small proportion of aluminium or beryllium, or both, and its surface may be thinly coated before assembly with plastic cement.
