Abstract
New interpolymers are produced by heating a synthetic drying oil with a catalyst and a monomeric organic compound having ethylenic unsaturation in an inert atmosphere, preferably in the presence of an inert solvent. The term "synthetic drying oil" is defined as a mixed ester of a polyhydric alcohol and a plurality of monocarboxylic acids, one of which is an a , b -unsaturated acid which can be substituted on the a or b carbon by a monovalent atom or radical. The monofunctional monocarboxylic acids are preferably derived from natural fatty oils such as linseed and soya oils. Suitable compounds having ethylenic unsaturation are vinyl ethers, ketones and esters, including vinyl chloride and sulphonic esters; acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters, amides, imides and nitriles; vinylidene compounds; halogenated olefines; esters of crotonic and itaconic acids and saturated and unsaturated esters of maleic and fumaric acids. Specified catalysts are benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, acetyl benzoyl peroxide, diethyl dioxide, succinyl peroxide and urea peroxide. The inert atmospheres used are of carbon dioxide or nitrogen and xylene or other hydrocarbons are suitable solvents. Polymerization may be carried out under pressure. The products may be incorporated into coating materials containing also pigments, hydrocarbon thinners and cobalt naphthenate driers, and examples are given of blending the products with linseed oil-modified alkyd resin in the production of enamels. The products are also useful as impregnating and waterproofing agents, in adhesives, printing inks and artificial leather coatings. Specification 569,404 is referred to.
