[Class 29] An open-topped self-service refrigerated display case has a lower display chamber A with a continuously open access opening A<1> at the top, an upper chamber B communicating with the display chamber at a level below the top of the display chamber, and refrigerating devices 14, 15 located one in each chamber whereby cold air circulates between the chambers as shown by the arrows, frost being deposited on the upper refrigerator 14 and a stratified buffer layer of air 48 being formed across the access opening. The rear wall 3 of the case extends above the front wall 4, which has a glass panel 4a, and the side walls are surmounted by sector shaped glass panels 5a. A curtain wall or baffle 6 extends from the top wall 1 to a point below the top of the front wall to form the upper chamber B containing the finned refrigerating coil 14 and divided by a central vertical partition 25. Drip trays 23 below the coil 14 support electric heaters 28 for defrosting. The refrigerating coils 15b in the display chamber A are enclosed in flat vertical casings 15 filled with eutectic solution and spaced in the chamber to form bins, and the refrigerant passes in series through the coils 15b and 14. A lamp 7 and mirror 8 are provided. The refrigerating machine and the defrosting heater 28 are controlled thermostatically by the system forming the subject-matter of Specification 601,150 so that the coil 14 is defrosted when the refrigerating machine is switched off.
