Abstract

Metallic impurities are removed from graphite electrodes by treating them with an aqueous solution of an acid such as hydrochloric acid and an oxidising agent such as hypochlorous acid or chlorine at temperatures up to the boiling point of the solution. If hypochlorous acid is used, periodic additions of sodium hypochlorite may be made to maintain the necessary concentration. Electrodes are placed on graphite or wooden strips in a rubber-lined steel tank, water and hydrochloric acid are added in amounts to give a 1 per cent. solution and sodium hypochlorite is added to produce a saturated solution of hypochlorous acid. Steam may be introduced and the solution circulated through rubber pipes and pump. A rubber vent pipe is provided in the tank cover which fits into a gas seal. Impurities removed are aluminium, iron, magnesium, titanium, nickel, chromium, vanadium, calcium and compounds such as oxides thereof. Specifications 366,973 and 542,363 are referred to.
