Abstract

580,956. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. Aug. 4, 1944, No. 14937. Convention date, Aug. 7, 1943. [Classes 8 (i) and 8 (ii)] In a suction cleaner of the kind in which dirt-laden air is drawn by a suction creating fan into an initial dirt separator then through a final filter provided with a filter-cleaning nozzle, the latter is fixed and is connected by a conduit to the initial separator, and the filter is movable at a speed which is slow compared with that of the revolution of the fan. Fig: 1 shows a fan suction cleaner comprising an initial separator 9 carrying a strainer 19 and baffle plates 18, -and a normally stationary fabric filter 33 carried by a perforated cylindrical drum 38. The filter is rotated during cleaning when a low speed motor 59 geared to a top plate 39 of the filter is switched on by means of a pressure responsive bellows 61 connected to the filter chamber 34 being extended by a pressure rise occasioned by dirt clogging the filter. A stationary filter-cleaning nozzle 73 mounted within the filter chamber is connected to the initial separator 9 by a conduit 76 normally closed by a spring-pressed pivoted valve 79 and opened by a solenoid 80 energised by the motor switch 68. In a modification, Fig. 6, dirt is collected on the outer surface of a continuously rotating filter 138 and a second fan 121 driven by the same motor that drives the primary fan provides suction through a conduit 154 to a stationary filter-cleaning nozzle 151 and delivers dirt removed therefrom through a conduit 159 to the initial dirt separator. A continuously rotating brush 152 geared to a motor 162 driving the filter is mounted in the filtercleaning nozzle.
