<PICT:0584757/III/1> <PICT:0584757/III/2> A degreasing or cleaning apparatus comprises a container 2 for cleaning fluid divided by a partition 14 into a settling chamber 17 and a supply chamber 16. The articles to be cleaned are placed on a perforated top plate 11, and the fluid is played over them by a nozzle or brush 25 on a hose 23 supplied by a centrifugal pump 33 drawing on the supply chamber 16. The plate 11 is perforated only over that part which overlies the settling chamber 17 to which the dirty liquid passes, a baffle 15 preventing it reaching the supply chamber except over the partition 14 from the settling chamber. There may be further partitions 14 and baffles 15 to provide a series of settling chambers to ensure the trapping of lighter forms of sludge. Where inflammable grease solvents are employed, the cover 5 of the apparatus has means for closing it down automatically in the event of fire. The cover is held open by a pair of bell-cranks 37, 41 jointed together at 40, the upper one 37 being pivoted to the cover at 38 and the lower one 41 seating on a fixed abutment 42. The whole is held rigid by a fusible or combustible link 45 which is destroyed if fire occurs. Closure of the cover is assisted by a spring 50.
