Abstract

571,128. Impregnating porous iron parts with copper. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Jan. 10, 1944, No. 421. Convention date, June 24, 1943. [Class 83 (i)] [Also in Group II] In impregnating porous iron parts with copper sufficient additional iron is added to the copper to satisfy the dissolving action of molten copper on iron. The porous iron article is preferably produced by pressing and sintering from powder. When impregnation is effected by immersing the article in a bath of molten copper at a temperature of about 2050‹ F. from 3 to 6 per cent, of iron is added to the molten copper. In another method in which copper powder is used, from 4 to 8 per cent of iron powder is mixed with the copper and the mixture is piled on the iron part to be impregnated. On heating to 2050‹ F., the copper dissolves the iron to the limit of its capacity and enters the iron part by capillary action, any excess iron powder remaining as dust that can be brushed away. This process may be applied before sintering, the powder being piled on the briquette or compact. Sintering and impregnation then take place simultaneously. Lengths of copper iron alloy in strip form may be cut off and placed on the compact instead of using powder. Simultaneous sintering and impregnation may also be effected by the immersion method.
