Abstract
Dialkyl esters of a -bromo-dibasic acids are prepared by heating a compound of general formula COOR-(CH2)n-COX, where R is an alkyl group, X is a halogen and n is a positive integer greater than three, with slightly more than one molecular proportion of bromine in the presence of red phosphorus and then completely removing excess bromine and reacting the a -bromo-acid p halide with an alcohol. The dialkyl ester may be hydrolysed to the acid. In the example, ethyl hydrogen pimelate is refluxed with thionyl chloride and the latter evaporated off. The acid chloride, so formed, is brominated as above, excess bromine removed by reducing the pressure, and the product added to cold absolute ethyl alcohol giving diethyl a -bromopimelate. Diethyl a -bromoadipate may be prepared in a similar way from ethyl hydrogen adipate.
