Abstract
575,076. Lenses. WRAY (OPTICAL WORKS), Ltd., and WYNNE, C. G. Feb. 25, 1944, No. 3550. [Class 97 (i)] The invention relates to large aperture objectives of the type comprising at each side of the stop a meniscus component a-b and c having its concave surface adjacent the stop and of greater curvature than its convex surface, together with a convergent system e and f at the side of each meniscus remote from the stop. The convergent systems may consist of a single element as shown, of two or more cemented elements, or of a number of such members, and the menisci may consist of two or more cemented or closely-located elements, or one meniscus may be a single element as described in Specification 575,075. According to the invention, E being the equivalent focal length of the lens and p the diameter of the entrance pupil, the central axial separation d5 between the concave surfaces of the menisci lies between (0.11E+0.2p) and (0.11E + 0.5p) when the overall distance between the vertices of the front and back surfaces of the lens is not greater than (0.21E +p), and lies between (0.14E + 0.2p) and (0.14E + 0.5p) when the said overall distances is greater than (0.21E+p). Preferably, one of the menisci has a divergent element with an AbbÚ V number less than 37.0, and a convergent element with an AbbÚ V number greater than 54.0. The ratio of the axial separation of the concave surfaces of the menisci to the equivalent focal length may be less than 0.27. One or more of the elements, for example the divergent element in one cemented meniscus, may be formed of an alkali metal halide crystal. Some of the lens surfaces may be slightly aspherical. Tables are given relating the axial separation of the concave surfaces of the menisci to the overall distance between the vertices of the front and back lens surfaces for various values of the relative apertures, and tables of data for two specific examples of lens are also given. Specification 564,133 also is referred to.
