Abstract

575,057. Pipe couplings. CHIFFEY, E. Feb. 24, 1944, No. 3457. [Class 99 (i)] A coupling for hose or soft metal pipes comprises a rigid tubular member 6, which is fitted over the end of the pipe and has secured thereon a hollow support 9 which is subsequently expanded to grip the pipe, a strengthening conical member 16 being then forced in to expand the support 9 still further. The member 6 has a tapered bore with helical ribs which may resemble screw teeth, e.g., of Whitworth or Buttress type, or ribbing. The support 9 is soldered or welded to the member 6 and expanded by a tool formed as a rod with a bulbous head which is drawn through by screw and nut action.
