Abstract

561,392. Gypsum. HIMSWORTH, F. R, LEFEBURE, V., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 13, 1942, No. 9702. Drawings to Specification. [Class 1 (iii)] Gypsum in a form suitable for conversion into plaster of Paris is obtained by hydrating finely divided anhydrite, with a quantity of water sufficient to prevent setting of the anhydrite, in continuous manner in two or more stages. Anhydrite and water are caused to.flow through a series of stages in which the degree of hydration is continuously increased, hydrated calcium sulphate and water being withdrawn, from the last stage ; part of the magma so withdrawn may be recirculated. Seed crystals obtained according to the process of Specification 561,206 may be introduced into the reaction zone at the start of the process. The hydration may be effected in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a mixture of a sulphate of a monovalent metal (or ammonium) with a sulphate of a trivalent metal with or without a sulphate of a divalent metal, e.g. as described in Specification 561,205.
