Abstract
560,803. Escape hatches &c. CHESTON, A. S., EDMONDS, E. C., CHESTON, B., and OLDHAM, F. A. M. Nov. 13, 1942, No. 16056. [Class 4] An escape hatch &c. 3 retained in an aperture of an airplane fuselage &c. by pin-and-slot connections 7, 9 on its longitudinal edges has a releasing lever 12,which is pivoted at 11 in a median longitudinal member 10, fixed in the boundary frame 4 of the hatch, and also releasably engages by a slot 14 with a fulcrum pin 15 carried by a bracket fixed to the aperture frame 1. An operating handle 23 pivoted to the releasing lever 12 forms part of a bell-crank lever, the other arm carrying a hook 20 for locking engagement with a pin 21 fixed in the member 10 attached to the hatch frame 4. When the releasing lever 12 is turned down about the pivot 15 from the locking position shown in Figs. 4 and 5 to the position of Fig. 7 the hatch is lifted up (with the assistance of leaf springs 27, Fig. 4) and is freed from the hook 20 and the pin-and-slot connections, the slot 15 also allowing disengagement of the lever 12 from the pin 15 so that the hatch can be jettisoned.
