Abstract
569,337. Alloys; annealing. HALL, H. C. Nov. 9, 1940, No. 16286. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Bearings are made from alummium alloys containing 3-7 per cent of tin, 4.8-7.5 per cent of a hardening constituent, 0.8-1.8 per cent of silicon, 0.3-1 per cent of magnesium, up to 0.2 per cent of refining elements, and up to 0.1 per cent of impurities. Up to a quarter of the tin may be replaced by one or more of the metals antimony, cadmium, lead, bismuth and zinc. The hardening constituent may consist of 1.5-3.8 per cent of nickel or manganese or both, up to a third of which may be replaced by one or more of the metals molybdenum, chromium, tungsten, cobalt and vanadium, 0.05-0.6 per cent of iron and from 1.8 to less than 4 per cent of copper, up to 1 per cent of which may be replaced by silver. The refining elements may be titanium, zirconium, tantalum, lithium, niobium, cerium and boron. The bearings may be made by extrusion or die casting, and may be hardened by heating to 500‹ C., quenching in water or oil, and heating for 10 hours at 180‹ C., or quenching may be effected direct from extrusion at over 460‹ C. followed by ageing; or hardening may be effected by cold working, and heat-treated material may be softened to a suitable hardness for some uses by reheating to about 210‹ C.
