Abstract

567,630. Drills. ALEXANDER MACHINERY, Ltd., G. H., and PERKINS, J. M. Oct. 25, 1943, No. 17550. [Class 83 (iii)] Drills are made hollow to receive a pilot drill of material suitable for withstanding the penetration pressure whilst the body is provided with inserted cutting edges of tungsten carbide &c. to withstand the higher cutting speed at the circumference. The pilot e is prevented from rotating in the fluted body a by flats i and grub screws h, and is backed up by a rod f adjusted by a screw g. Cutting edges c are formed on inserts d of tungsten carbide &c. or on blocks tipped with hard metal. Shoulders m on the body act as chip breakers and coolant conduits are provided. To distribute the cutting duty between the edges c without precision grinding, the edges may be variously notched as at n or inclined in various ways.
