[Class 119] A machine carbine or other automatic firearm has a collapsable butt which folds under the weapon when not in use, but which forms a rigid triangular assembly when swung into operative position. The butt, which is shown in full lines in the collapsed position, and in broken lines in the operative position, comprises a forked main member F pivoted at 10 on the underside of the spring casing 1, a strut G pivoted at 15 to the main member and a butt plate H which is pivoted at 21 to the strut and has ears 26 adapted to engage frictionally over the end of the member F, the butt plate having a positioning step engaged by the member F. The butt plate is urged into contact with the end of the member F by a longitudinal spring plunger in the strut G, the spring plunger acting on a lug 22 on the butt plate and having a catch 19 which secures the butt assembly to the barrel casing when collapsed. The main member F is retained in operative position by lugs which engage a pair of longitudinal grooves in a block on the underside of the recoil spring end-cap 6. A pivoted spring-held locking member 40, when pressed at 43 permits the end cap 6 to be pressed forward slightly to release the member F, whereupon, by straightening the strut G and butt plate H into alignment with the member F, the butt assembly may be swung to the underside of the barrel casing, in which position the catch 19 is able to enter a slot therein. The butt plate is then swung back into the fullline position shown, this movement allowing the catch 19 to move into locking engagement with the barrel casing.
