Abstract
553,363. Bearings. CONSTANTINE, W. W. (General Motors Corporation). Sept. 3, 1942, No. 12431. [Class 41] [Also in Group XXXIV] Bearing surfaces of fine grain silver are electrolytically deposited on metallic layers, for instance of copper, fused or welded or otherwise thermally bonded to backings, for instance of steel. The backing is degreased, cleaned electrolytically in an alkaline bath, dipped in an acid bath and the copper layer applied either by casting in a deoxidizing atmosphere or by electrolytic deposition followed by welding. The copper layer is degreased and cleaned as above, rinsed, given a bright-dip in acid, again rinsed, and dipped in 10 per cent KCN solution, after which it is placed first in a silver striking bath (AgCN, KCN and K 2 CO 3 ) and then in the plating bath proper (AgCN, KCN and K 2 CO 3 with Na, S 2 O 3 and NH 4 OH as grain size reducing agent or brightener). The backing 10 with the copper layer 12 may be suspended in the bath 20 by a clamp 14, 16, the anode consisting of a hollow shaft 30 rotated by a drive 32 and having a bag 36 or spun glass, cotton or other material filled with silver balls tied to the open lower end, current being supplied thereto through a wiper 40.
