Abstract

552,459. Electron-oscillators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 14, 1941, No. 13248. Convention date, Oct. 15, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] Electron discharge devices of the velocity modulation type, comprise closed resonant chambers removably arranged outside the envelope and coupled to the velocity modulating and energy extracting electrodes inside the envelope. As shown in Fig. 1, the envelope consists of metal sections 11, 12, 13 connected together by seals 14, 15, and carrying annular discs 21, 22, 23, 24. The source 10 of the electron stream is carried by the seal 16, and the collecting electrode 27 is sealed through or formed by the opposite end of the envelope. The resonant chambers 25, 26 are made with the resilient inner tubular portions which grip the envelope sections and provide good electrical connection with the discs. Alternatively the envelope may be made of glass, and the discs formed with tubular extensions inside the envelope. In this case, the resonant chambers fit over the glass envelope and are capacitatively coupled with the discs. The device is adapted for operating at different frequencies by substituting different resonators, or, alternatively, the resonators may be made in telescoping sections which may be adjusted to provide the desired operating frequency. A focusing coil is disposed around the envelope.
