551,525. Separation of halide vapours. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. July 23. 1941, No. 9332. Convention date, March 15. [Classes 1 (ii) and 1 (iii)] Mixtures of metallic (including silicon) halide vapours other than iron chloride and titanium tetrachloride of which one is normally solid and the other normally liquid with a condensation point lower than that of the solid, are separated by condensing the major portion of the solid with enough of the liquid to wash the vapour and thus eliminate a substantial portion of condensed solid and thereafter further condensing the liquid halide. The mixture first condensed may be separated by evaporating the liquid halide sometimes in presence of a gaseous diluent. The vapour may be sprayed with a liquid halide to assist elimination. In the apparatus shown mixed vapours are introduced at 1 into condenser 2 and are cooled, e.g. to below 40‹C., the condensed mixture being collected in chamber 6, clogging being avoided by moving scrapers 5. Scrapers 8 in chamber 6 move the condensate to a zone where the liquid is vaporized and passes with the uncondensed vapour to a spraying condenser 11 where it is sprayed with a liquid halide and the condensate collected in chamber 12. Solid condensate emerges through outlet 17. The mixture may be produced by halogenating a metal bearing material. The metals concerned include iron-tin, iron-silicon, iron-zirconium, iron-vanadium, aluminiumtitanium, and aluminium-silicon, the halide being the chloride.
