[Class 95] [Also in Groups V, XVI and XXXVI] Dies and moulds are made of sintered powdered metal and have a multitude of passages through which liquid may pass during the manufacture and treat. ment of cups, bottles and other containers made from fibrous pulp. The dies &c. are formed by subjecting finely divided metals, with or without metal and non- metallic elements or compounds, which may be volatile, to heat and pressure, and then moulding and/or machining to shape, and may be used as follows:-(1) (Fig. 1) Pulp containers 1 produced by deposition or pouring on wire gauze formers are placed in a mould 2 of porous sintered powdered metal, and suction is applied through a passage 6 while a die is pressed into the container. (2) (Fig. 2) The die 10 may be porous. (3) Both the mould and the die may be porous. (4) Pulp is poured into porous moulds and spread thereover by dies. (5) Pulp containers or other articles may be coated or impregnated with waterproofing or colouring substances or printing ink passed through the pores of the mould or the die. The mould &c. may have non-porous sections, the porous sections being in the form of a pattern. A pattern may be made by coating parts of a porous mould with a resist such as wax or printer's ink and then electroplating or otherwise coating the exposed portions with metal or other material. Alternatively, openings may be cut or cast in a non-porous die or mould, sintered powdered metal being then pressed and moulded into the openings.
